FireFox 3 has been a pain in the neck ever since I downloaded it. Please tell me I am not the only one.

I continually come across a nasty text rendering bug when using this browser. At first I expected to see this bug being written up all over the internet. But I never heard anyone else complain. So I threw up some screenshots of my issue on twitter, and came to find out that some other people did not have this issue with their install of FF3. So I completely removed FF3 and then re-downloaded it. Same problem.

What is the problem you ask? This:
ff3-bug-1.jpg
This is what every single Google webpage looks like for me with FF3. Horrible. The kerning is completely messed up, the margins are all jacked up, and look at the links!!! Look at those underlines, unbelievable!

And it's not just Google:

CNN suffers here as well.

Even ThinkVitamin.com gets bitten by the bug.

Now the odd thing is that not all text shows up like this. Most websites show up completely normal. Like mine for example:
ff3-bug-4.jpg
Nothing wrong with any of the text on my website at all. Shows up completely normal. And there are many other websites like this... Just look at the above screenshots. With the exception of Google, all the screenshots have text that shows up completely fine, with some text that is totally ruined by this bug.

So what's going on here? You got me. My guess is is has something to do with NOT applying enough CSS to the text. FF3 displays text horribly on my machines (Quad core G5 and an Intel Macbook Pro) by default. So if all you did was change the "color" in CSS, that wouldn't be enough and FF3 would force your text to look like crap. But if you applied a "font-size" property and a "margin"... FF3 would give in and decide to display your text like other normal browsers.

Even Mozilla themselves are not prone to this disease:

Yes, this is the kind of crap I deal with when using FF3.

All I can say is LONG LIVE SAFARI. In my personal opinion, I think every browser should be forcefully shut down, and Web Kit should be the browser we all use. Wouldn't that make things easier :)

Anyone else have this same problem with FireFox3?

Peace,
Drew

Max Says,
I've seen weird things like this happen before, You should be able fix it by deleting all the preferences files. You will lose all the bookmarks in firefox but you got rid of it so its probably not that important. Anyway delete the firefox folder in your home directory in Library/Application Support Deleting and re-downloading rarely works because of the way mac's are set up.

Russell Heimlich Says,
Did you change the default font at all in the settings?

to me your sites text still looks bad. Its cramped and Italicized. But i think the problem lies with me again.

Basil,
Wall-e is one of the best movies I have seen in a long time. I give it 100%. It was super good.

Everyone,
Do yourself a favor and go see Wall-e!!!

Adam,
Great suggestion, but I don't know if that is possible. If my font's were messed up, they would be messed up in all applications; like Safari, Photoshop, etc. But the fonts are fine in every application, and I have not changed the fonts since FF2. So that means FF3 is the problem. If it is a font problem as you say (and I agree), FF3 would be the one with the issue. Not my fonts.

Hey Drew- Ive seen issues like this before, and it looks to me like a problem with your font files on your system, or, better, a miscommunication. Ive had similar appearance of text in the system (in address book particularly) when my Helvetica or Arial font files get fouled up. Not sure how to direct you but you could have a screwy version of one of those faces competing with your system versions... -Adam

Basil Says,
Yeah I actually downgraded to FF2 because of a strange bug that happened every time I clicked on any of the top buttons(file, edit etc.) they would freeze there and it was so annoying so I just downgraded. Also I couldn't have the theme to make it look like Safari on FF3 so another reason.

Oh btw Wall-e is AWESOME!

Sam Says,
I have been dealing with a bug on font issues while designing a web page. We were testing on my friends FF3 and my menu fonts wont reduce below a certain size. I have noticed that I need to make all declarations and it fixed the margin and lineheight issues but not the size.

I am not upgrading yet... still FF2 on Mac.

Thanks for pointing this out.

I have been using FF3 since it launched and have not noticed the bug you speak of. I have noticed issues with deleting bookmarks. Lately I have been tempted to move to Safari, but I don't like not being able to open bookmarks in the sidebar like FF.

Wow, I did see one other post on this matter, but in your case it looks pretty bad. I don't think FF2 ever did that on a mac? I guess Safari it is :)
